The Solway Science Fair and the state competition, the Science Talent Search have been held annually for several years at our school and runs throughout the year. This program aims to engage the budding scientists in our community by encouraging them to undertake a scientific project in one of the following areas: Creative Writing, Posters, Games, Working Models and Inventions, Science Photography, Experimental Research, Video Production and Computer Games. Students follow criteria set by the Science Teacher's Association of Victoria in the state competition and are judged accordingly.
The Solway Science Fair is a celebration of all the students efforts. They present their work to the whole community by demonstrating and discussing the project with others. This gives students not only the opportunity to share their achievements and demonstrate their scientific knowledge, but it also develops oral presentation skills.
Some of the students are then selected to enter their work in the Science Talent Search, which is a statewide competition that includes students from all levels and schools across Victoria. Again they go through the judging process. In the past Solway has been extremely successful, winning both major and minor bursaries and credits across all categories. The school has won the school's prize for Excellence in six of the last eight years.
It is most rewarding however, just to see the pleasure and pride in the faces of the students when they share their work, and to see such talent displayed in all the students involved!
We encourage all students to have a go and become involved in this competition.
